Ohio University holds one of the largest college campus Halloween celebrations in the country, but there are still rules to follow.
Going to Athens, Ohio for Halloween weekend is a tradition for many college students. The population of Athens doubles or triples most years as people come to join in the celebration. The Ohio University campus and Court Street hold huge parties and activities for all guests and students to enjoy. Costumes are a big deal at Ohio University’s Halloween celebration, and all college students and their guests are encouraged to get dressed up. Despite the fun, however, it is still important to celebrate safely and responsibly. Ohio University Halloween CelebrationsThe Halloween celebrations at Ohio University are huge; Court Street holds a huge party that lasts from Saturday, October 31 at 2 p.m. and ends Sunday, November 1 at 2 a.m. Live music, food, beverages and costume contests line Court Street, Union Street and many other areas of campus and surrounding streets. Guests and students are encouraged to take part in all activities. Some of the costume contests will take place from 6 to 11 p.m. across from the Court Street Diner, and bands will be playing in several areas. Between costume contests, music and games there are also many individually held parties, restaurants and other activities. Costumes for Ohio UniversityAlthough the range of costumes is huge, there are a few restrictions on what is permissible at Ohio University during Halloween weekend. Costume props that could be confused with a weapon are prohibited, as are costumes that seem to impersonate a law enforcement officer. However, there are many other costumes for college students that will not cause any problems for students or their guests. Entering into one of the costume contests is a great way to get involved in the Halloween celebration. Staying on Campus for Ohio University’s Halloween WeekendStudents or friends who want to stay in the dorms for the weekend will need to be registered with the school beforehand. Dormitories will give students and their guests a wristband that must be worn for the entire weekend so that they can get in and out of the buildings. One thing to keep in mind before staying on campus is that students who have guests are responsible for the behavior of those guests. Destroyed or damaged property will be billed to the student, and any underage drinking on campus will be punished both by the University and the police. There are hotels in the area that can accommodate students and guests for the Halloween weekend if staying in a dormitory is not an option. Halloween Weekend SafetyWhen celebrating at Ohio University, it is important to take safety precautions. Never travel without a group, and exchange cell phone numbers with friends in case someone should become separated. Set up meeting times and places if people choose to go to different areas of Athens during the weekend. Underage drinking is illegal, and those caught drinking under the age of 21 or supplying underage students or guests with alcohol will be arrested. Carrying legal identification can help avoid any issues with underage drinking. The police force in Athens is strengthened during Halloween weekend in an attempt to ensure the safety of all students and guests. There are still simple safety precautions to remember, however:
