Getting into medical school is not just based on stellar academic achievement. Focus on preparing for the med school interview by preparing answers to possible questions.

Many medical school students report that success in being offered admission results from being prepared for the medical college interview. These interviews are conducted in a variety of ways however, most have a panel of interviewers that may include faculty, community members, alumni and students.

Students may dread the prospect of the interview however, the experience is generally described as positive, informal and conversation. Most medical school interviews last for about one hour.

Medical School Interview Prep Should Include Examples of Experience

Those who have applied to medical school should take the time needed to feel confident that answers given during a medical college interview are concise, to the point and include examples that reflect the application itself, letters of reference and test scores.

Expect questions that may offer a chance to explore the reasons for an interest in the medical field and those that fall into some of these categories: technical, social, experiential, motivation and attitude. For example, consider responses to the following questions:

  • What is the one thing that distinguishes from the rest of the candidates applying to medical school?
  • Would this academic background be described as diverse? Please explain.
  • Related experiences in working with people in authority
  • Provide some ideas about how learning is best achieved
  • What are some of the things that may have to be given up to be doctor?
  • How are people helped when they do not want to be helped?
  • In what field will the next major advancement in medicine will come?
  • What would be an accurate description of the relationship between science and medicine?
  • Which family member has been the greatest influence so far and why?
  • What seems a likely career path for the next 10 years?
  • Describe any interests outside of medicine and getting into medical school

Perhaps the biggest element to consider when an invitation is extended for an interview for medical school is that this is a big step in the admission process. Interviews are an opportunity for interviewers and aspiring students to assess each other.

As a result, candidates preparing for a medical school interview should feel confident in asking several questions of the interviewing committee.

Medical College Interview Preparation an Opportunity to Explore

Often, interviewing committees will ask candidates for questions at the end of the interview. It may be important to ask what the committee is seeking in the most highly qualified candidates and what types of experiences that the most competitive aspiring medical students possess.

An opportunity to get into medical school by being invited for a medical college interview is a big step towards a medical career. However, good preparation is truly the key which includes being able to describe personal and academic experiences that relate to a future aimed at working in the health care field as a physician.
